Larry Petterborg

Larry Petterborg: Back to Africa (Main Meeting Room)

Like many others involved with photography today, Larry started his journey with a Kodak Brownie in the 1950s. Growing up in Utah, he developed a keen interest in the natural world and a love for being outdoors. After earning degrees in Biology at the University of Utah, Larry moved to Texas in pursuit of a doctoral degree.

During his studies, he found the Woodlawn Camera Club in San Antonio (now the Greater San Antonio Camera Club) and has been a member of one or more photography clubs ever since. Larry joined the Plano Photography Club in 1998 prior to moving to Dallas to take a faculty position at Texas Woman’s University. He is presently a member of the Heard Nature Photographers Club and the Dallas Camera Club.

Following retirement in 2016, Larry and his wife Mary have been able to travel more and pursue photography in many new locations. In March 2020, they went to Africa for the first time. It was a wonderful experience that unfortunately cut short by the global COVID pandemic. So they were eager to return and the opportunity to do so presented itself this past July. As the Field Trip Director for the Dallas Camera Club, Larry asked another member, Mike Hill (a frequent Africa visitor), to put together a group trip to Kenya.

Program Description: Larry’s program will present highlights of visits to three different national parks and reserves in Kenya. If you like elephants, lions, monkeys, and brightly colored birds, you are sure to enjoy his show.

 May President's Message

Parvin Stiles
Parvin Stiles

Much of May is like late April! It’s green everywhere. Spring flowers are gone but wildflowers are now in bloom. The weather is usually nice but sometimes rainy or stormy. That rain fills the creeks and lakes creating a wonderful backdrop for reflections.

I encourage you to go out there with your photographer friends and shoot. Also, have your camera handy as you drive about so that you may safely pull over and photograph a thing that grabs your interest. I encourage you to practice and take delight in this wonderful hobby and our club activities.

I am honored to serve as the new club president. Let me note a little about myself for those who may not know me well. I joined the Plano Photography Club in 2008. Since then I have served on the Executive Committee as both Program Chair and Activity Chair. I was part of the search team that found our present meeting location and I helped launch our current website. So, I have been very engaged with the club but as president, I feel like a newbie. I have much to learn from my peers and you.

I’d like to thank David Swinney for his outstanding leadership and service as our President these last two years and I’m happy that he has chosen to stay on board as our webmaster.

I’d like to also thank Clive Fernando for serving as our Contest Chair and Cliff McKenzie for serving as Activity Chair. Clive and Cliff have stepped down and Craig Rowen and Mary Ruehle have stepped up to fill the positions. Thank you for your service!

The other leadership members remain unchanged and I thank each one for their engagement.

The PPC End of Year Awards and Dinner party is on May 16th for the members. Please take a moment to register so we can have an accurate count to order meat. We ask everyone to bring a side dish or a dessert to share.

I hope to see you at the party and/or a photo outing!
