Located in Fair Park, Texas Discovery Gardens offers a wide variety of subjects for photographers in a compact, beautifully maintained setting.

The centerpiece is the Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House, a two-story tropical environment filled with free-flying butterflies and exotic plants - perfect for practicing close-up and motion photography.

Outside, the gardens showcase Texas-native and pollinator-friendly plants, water features, and shaded pathways that provide great lighting and diverse compositions year-round.

From colorful flowers and insects to reflections in the ponds and architectural details around the grounds, this site offers something for every style - from macro to wide-angle nature photography.

March 2026

Sherman Celtic Festival and Highland Games

Please plan to join us in Sherman on Saturday, March 21, 2026, for an afternoon at the 9th Annual Sherman Celtic Festival & Highland Games. This event is a joint activity with the Dallas Camera Club.

The Sherman Celtic Festival is packed with energy, color, music, and motion, making it an excellent outing for photographers (festival map).

Athletes compete in traditional Highland events like the caber toss and stone put, surrounded by kilts, clan banners, and cheering spectators, offering plenty of chances to capture dramatic action and expressive faces.

Around the field, you’ll find pipe and drum bands, dancers in tartan, historical reenactors, and a Viking village, all rich with texture and character for both portraits and environmental scenes.

The family-friendly setting - with vendors, demonstrations, and casual moments between performers and visitors - adds human-interest stories that round out the day. Altogether, it should be a fun, visually varied environment where everyone can experiment with different styles, from fast action to thoughtful storytelling.

February 2026

With brick streets, working Longhorn cattle drives, weathered barns, and classic storefronts, there are countless subjects whose names fit the theme's letters, so photographers of all levels will be able to find engaging images around every corner.

The Winter Olympics twist (because the event is taking place on the final weekend of the Olympic Winter Games) adds a fun layer of visual wordplay, inviting participants to interpret each letter in imaginative ways and compare their findings.

The mix of structured prompts and free roaming should encourage conversation, sharing locations and ideas, and coming home with a set of uniquely personal Stockyards images.

Amateur rugby matches offer fast-paced action, strong emotions, and varied compositions that can challenge and improve our photographic skills.

The close field access makes it easier to experiment with different angles, focal lengths, and compositions than at large professional venues.

Rugby delivers physical clashes, tackles, lineouts, and scrums that translate into dynamic, storytelling images full of motion and impact.

Players’ facial expressions and interactions provide opportunities to capture emotion, intensity, and camaraderie, not just frozen action.
