Club Competitions

Monthly competitions give members a structured way to practice, learn from judges’ critiques, and celebrate photographic achievement.

Purpose

The competition program is designed to help members improve through practice, education, and recognition.

Practice Your Art

Monthly contests encourage members to keep photographing, editing, and submitting work regularly.

Learn From Critique

Independent judges provide verbal critiques that help members see their images from another point of view.

Celebrate Achievement

Competitions reward members’ photographic growth, effort, and success throughout the club year.

In addition, competitions provide an educational component. They are judged by independent judges who also provide a verbal critique of each image. The images and the critiques are then included in a slide show that is part of every monthly meeting.

Competition Year

How the annual competition cycle is organized.

Annual Contest Cycle

Contests are conducted on a monthly basis beginning in May and continuing through the following March for a total of ten monthly competitions. There is no contest in December.

Half of the contests have specific themes; the rest are open. Two of the monthly contests are prints and the rest electronic.

There may also be year-long special interest contests. These may include Cell Phone, Portraits, Photojournalism, Nature, or other topics.

Participation in Competitions

Competition participation is optional, but strongly encouraged.

Participation in the monthly competitions is optional for club members.

But everyone — especially new members — is encouraged to take part to practice, improve, and reap the rewards. You will become a better photographer.

Competition Levels

Members participate in one of four levels. New members may choose either Entry or Intermediate.

Entry

A starting level available to new members who want to begin competing with others at a similar experience level.

Intermediate

An available starting level for new members with more confidence or prior photographic experience.

Advanced

Advancement to this level depends on how well a member does during the prior competition year.

Master

The highest competition level, reached through strong prior-year performance.
