Overview

Mowdy Ranch Mustangs

Late this spring, the Plano Photography Club will travel north to Mowdy Ranch (photos | map/directions), a 4,000-acre wild horse sanctuary near Coalgate in southeastern Oklahoma.

Mowdy Ranch is one of four wild horse sanctuaries designated as a public off range pasture for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Located 12 miles NE of Coalgate in the hills of southeastern Oklahoma, the Ranch offers daily horse tours and lodging facilities for wild horse enthusiasts.

It comprises 4000 acres of wooded hills and open valleys in the historical home of the legendary Choctaw ponies. These horses were famous for their toughness and endurance which was showcased in the 2004 film Hidalgo.

Mowdy Ranch currently houses 350 wild horses on a long-term basis. In addition to the adult mustangs who make the ranch their home, the Ranch is also an adoption site, housing 15-20 yearlings available for adoption to qualified people.

There are few things in this world as beautiful as the wild mustangs of North America. Tough, resilient and independent, the mustangs that make their home at Mowdy Ranch are truly wild animals.

Visitors will have the opportunity to photograph the horses as they graze (no cowboys, stampedes, branding or intentional running of the horses). Some of the horses are semi-friendly, others are very timid.
